Physicians certified in Medical Toxicology must participate in the Medical Toxicology continuing certification process. ABEM believes that physicians who continue to practice Emergency Medicine in addition to their subspecialty should continue to maintain their EM certification.
Medical Toxicology continuing certification has moved to a module-based process similar to Emergency Medicine’s MyEMCert. The process is a shift from a high-stakes exam to modules that physicians can take from home. Like EM, Medical Toxicology is also moving to a five-year certification cycle and annual fee.
MyToxCert is a new way for Medical Toxicology–certified physicians to stay certified.
Core elements of MyToxCert include:
✔ Topic-specific modules that incorporate relevant subjects in Medical Toxicology
✔ Open-book modules that can be completed anywhere, anytime
✔ Immediate feedback pass/fail results, correct answers, and rationales
✔ Content that keeps you informed about Knowledge Advancements in the specialty
Transition
ABEM intends to release 4 MyToxCert modules by February 2024, and the remaining 2 modules should be available in February 2025.
Beginning in 2024, physicians certified in Medical Toxicology who renew their certification will transition from a ten-year certification cycle to a five-year cycle with an annual fee.

Physicians Certified By another ABMS Board
Physicians with primary certification from another board have the following options to recertify in Medical Toxicology:
- Pass 4 MyToxCert modules
- Pass 3 MyToxCert modules + 2 Medical Toxicology LLSAs
Note: ABEM requires physicians to comply with the ABEM Policy on Medical Licensure and agree to ABEM's Code of Professionalism.
Physicians will use MyToxCert to maintain Medical Toxicology subspecialty certification beginning in 2024.
