EM Training Programs

ABEM certification requires the successful completion of a three- or four-year program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

A current list of ACGME-accredited EM training programs is available on their website.

In-Training Exam (ITE)

Eligible residency programs can administer this annual exam which is designed to give you an estimate of how you can expect to perform on the Qualifying Exam. The ITE tests complex cognitive skills such as diagnostic processing and medical knowledge of the specialty.

ABEM Certification - Bringing Value to Your Career

ABEM certifies emergency physicians who meet our educational, professional standing, and examination standards. It will be your highest professional credential, reflecting that you have met an externally developed national standard. It's an accomplishment in which you can take pride.

Apply for ABEM Certification

To become ABEM certified you must meet board eligibility requirements.

Apply for initial certification in the last year of your residency, as soon as you are able. Once your application is approved and verified, you will be eligible to register for the Qualifying Exam which is administered the November after you graduate.

Residents who pass the Qualifying Exam are then assigned to an Oral Certification Exam the following year. Physicians earn ABEM-certified status upon passing the Oral Exam.
