Volunteer Opportunities: ABEM Item Writers

May 16, 2023

The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is seeking ABEM-certified physicians to fill a limited number of item writer vacancies. Nominations received by June 12, 2023, will be reviewed by the Board at its meeting in July 2023.

ABEM Item Writers

Volunteer item writers play a crucial role in developing ABEM test questions. The item development process is a complex system in which processes need to flow together each year for the overall project to succeed. The first and most crucial step is the drafting and submission of new test items. ABEM appreciates the significant time commitment required for item writers to successfully develop test items. More information about the role, qualifications, and time commitment can be found on the ABEM Website: Become an Item Writer.

Submitting Your Nomination

  1. Complete the Item Writer Nomination Form
  2. A recommendation from a professional colleague is also required using the Item Writer Recommendation Form

Forms received by June 12, 2023, will be reviewed by the Board at its meeting in July 2023. Physicians selected to fill these positions will begin orientation and training late this year and start their terms in early 2024.

If not selected, your completed nomination materials will stay active with ABEM for up to two years for consideration for future Item Writer opportunities
